Dead Reckoning Navigation

Trapeze ITS has been tracking approximately 18,000 vehicles, buses with a precision of 3 meters and our experience with metropolitan GPS environments has revealed that the GPS solution needs additional navigational aid in the urban canyons of large cities. The depth and reflective surfaces of the urban canyons can prevent satellite reception as well as introduce position errors resulting from multi-path reflection.

The mobile navigation system used by Trapeze ITS provides a robust solution for vehicle location determination.  The GPS module and ITSController™ are optimized for the urban canyon environments by continuously computing a Dead Reckoning (DR) position solution using specialized algorithms. The DR solution is constantly corrected by GPS position information to provide accurate and reliable positioning. In the event a GPS signal is lost, an inadequate number of satellites are in view, or multi-path occurs (a result of urban canyon effect, or driving through a tunnel), TransitMaster™ combines the last known good GPS position with the dead reckoning sensor inputs and maintains accurate position reporting through the largest, deepest urban canyons in the world.
