THE POSITION

Engineering Technician/Field Service Technician participates in the design, documentation and vehicle installations of Advanced Public CAD/AVL systems in the Public Transit Industry. This includes acquiring resources, coordinating, and leading the efforts of team members or third-party partners to deliver on time, on budget, and according to standards, guidelines and requirements.  This position is visible and the person in this role must maintain a high level of professionalism in both appearance and actions within challenging environments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Coordinates, directs and trains subcontracted installation crews with the following minimum duties:
    • ensures material is available and ready for install
    • assists in training install crews
    • assists in troubleshooting advanced installation problems
    • performs vehicle system software installation and data configuration
  • Performs prototype installations to verify the system design documentation, system integration, and vehicle functionality are correct
  • Works closely with customer maintenance personnel to coordinate system installation; vehicle availability, pre- and post-installation inspections, and to maintain installation logs
  • Utilizes and instills methods and workmanship standards to ensure optimum equipment operation and customer satisfaction
  • Coaches, trains, motivates and supervises project team members and subcontractors
  • Performs operational maintenance, system and technical product troubleshooting, repair and system tests
  • Support duties include contact with internal and external customers by phone, email and/or on-site visits when needed
  • Works to troubleshoot and resolve software, hardware, and configuration problems with the 2nd and 3rd level support engineers
  • Formal/informal training of customers, internal personnel, and subcontractors may be assigned
  • The individual must be able to coordinate their technical activities with other project team members:  those internal to Trapeze ITS, as well as the customer and third party
  • The individual must be able to keep good written records and be effective at written and verbal communication to customer representatives, subcontracted installers, and other Trapeze ITS personnel
  • Other duties may be assigned
  • Will require frequent travel to customer job site(s) within Canada and the US, sometimes with little notice

THE PERSON

The successful candidate must possess a Bachelors or Associates of Applied Science degree in Electronics Engineering, Automotive Technology, or Computer Information Systems Technologies from a 2-year college or technical school and 1 year of experience; or equivalent education and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidate must have the following qualifications:

  • Previous testing, analysis, and trouble shooting of complex electronic systems
  • Able to proficiently use analyzers, meters, other test equipment
  • Be able to read electrical and mechanical drawings, circuit diagrams, wiring schematics, etc.
  • Effective mathematic skills to perform measurements and calculations
  • Be computer literate
  • Have an understanding of mobile vehicle radio, mobile data terminals, audio and analog circuits, and GPS hardware
  • Be able to follow procedures and instructions to troubleshoot mobile vehicle hardware and software systems.
  • Managed and led multiple personnel and teams given competing deadlines.
  • Prefer previous experience with automotive computer electronics, commercial mobile radio installations, and or mobile hardware assembly and testing
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Must produce job related correspondence, documentation, and reports.
